Springs Publishing writers, photographers and designers won 11 awards in the Georgia Press Association’s 2022 Better Newspaper competition, the association announced. Four of the awards honored top spots in the traffic-based division in which Springs competed.

The awards were announced June 3 at the GPA’s 135th Annual Convention at Jekyll Island. Springs Publishing has received awards for work that appears in each of its print publications, including the Reporter, Atlanta Intown and Atlanta Senior Life newspapers.

Journalism Award

A selection of three business articles published in the Reporter and written by Amy Wenk, Collin Kelley, John Ruch and Maggie Lee received the top prize for business writing.

The cover design for the November issue of Atlanta Intown, which featured an aerial photograph of Midtown Atlanta, took the top spot in Page One’s design. Springs contributor Isadora Pennington received second place in the same category for her December cover illustration.

Springs also received top prize for Sports Features for articles written by Sammie Purcell and Chesny Young.

Three regular columnists for Springs Publications received awards for their monthly articles. Charles Seabrook won second place for his “Journeys with Charlie” column in Atlanta Senior Life. Tim Sullivan won third place in humor columns for his columns in Atlanta Intown, and Carol Niemi won third place in the serious columns category for her “To Know” columns in Reporter Newspapers.

Springs Publishing ranked second overall in its division for local news coverage. The first prize went to Smoke Signals, a Big Canoe monthly newspaper.

Advertising rewards

Springs Publishing also received three awards in the Advertising division. Creative Director Rico Figliolini’s work on print ads for ElectroBike won first place and his team was recognized for third place in the Home Furnishings and Newspaper Promotion categories.
