Local Nonprofit Applauds Michigan Senate Approval of Bill That Would End ‘Stamp Tax’
LANSING, Michigan (WJRT) – The Michigan Senate has passed legislation that would eliminate the so-called “tampon tax” on menstrual products, sending it to Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
It took several attempts and about five years for a bill to reach this stage, as many organizations continued to fight “menstrual poverty”.
Faith in Femininity has been working for a number of years to end menstrual poverty, ensuring that everyone who needs it has access to these products.
The young women behind the project told ABC12 News that while this bill won’t completely solve the problem, it will help make products more accessible.
It has been a long way to get the stamp tax eliminated so far, and it is now at the final stage, Governor Whitmer’s office.
If approved, Michigan would join more than 20 other states that have either ended the sales tax on menstrual products or have never had one.
While this is a step in the right direction, Madeline Gibb of Lake Fenton High School said there is still some way to go before ending period poverty.
“Michigan is taking a step towards the right thing for women, starting with this elimination of the tampon tax, but at 100% our goal should be to provide free feminine products to women,” Gibb said.
Gibb, along with three other high school girls, launched “Faith in Femininity” in 2017, an organization dedicated to helping women access menstrual products.
“In 2019, we became a non-profit organization,” Gibb said. “We accept donations and have packing nights where we pack feminine products in bags that will support them for a month of her cycle.”
Their organization distributes products across the county, and Gibb says the end result, by eliminating the “tampon tax,” will make those products more affordable and accessible.
“To limit a woman’s ability, anyone who is menstruating to function in everyday life is a horrible disservice,” Gibb said. “It’s so crucial that women’s products are accessible to everyone. “
