Winning medical illustrations and videos are just a few of the thousands of educational materials produced by Healthwise that inform, educate and support patients and caregivers throughout the care journey. The gold award-winning artwork, “Learning About Breast Cancer Surgery”, was recently updated to reflect Healthwise’s commitment to producing diverse and inclusive medical images and increasing representation of people who have historically been marginalized in medical images. The illustration includes people from different racial backgrounds and a variety of body types. Recent efforts to further this mission include expanding our medical image library; more instructions for low-text, high-visual patients; better representation in images; and inclusive written education.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Digital Health Awards for the sixth consecutive year,” said Christy Calhoun, chief content officer at Healthwise. “This award underscores our commitment to providing consumers with accurate, engaging and accessible health education. Our team of experts are focused on creating inclusive content, so people feel heard, understood and empowered to take action and advocate for their health. We appreciate that the Health Information Resource Center values this commitment to diversity.

In a recent study on the usability and reliability of Healthwise content, completed in January 2022, respondents said that Healthwise content was:

  • Easy to understand (99%).
  • Presented clearly (100%).
  • Highly trustworthy (90%).
