What is surprise billing? Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, explains that it’s when patients unknowingly receive care from a doctor or other healthcare provider who is not part of their company’s network. ‘assurance. Sometimes these bills arise in emergency situations when the patient is not able to choose their healthcare provider, medical transport company, hospital. She says patients often also receive surprise bills when they receive treatment from a provider on their healthcare team, such as an anesthesiologist who attended the surgery and is out of the network. In either case, patients are held responsible for care not covered by their insurance, sometimes amounting to hundreds, thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars plunging millions of Americans into financial crisis. Nancy says no one should have to worry about a surprise bill for treatment or a test that should be covered by insurance.

Nancy says the No Surprises Act will relieve patients of surprise medical bills. January 1stst this new federal law called the No Surprises Act will come into force. Nancy says the law is a big step in protecting patients from the nefarious practice of surprise billing. She says the No Surprises Act has one purpose and one purpose; to lift patients out of payment disputes and protect them from the devastating impact of unforeseen medical bills. The law does this by preventing patients from receiving surprise bills for emergency care and other unplanned off-grid care. Nancy says we believe the No Surprises Law should be strictly enforced to ensure patient protection. She says we call on Congress and the Biden administration to protect patients by following strict rules and strict application of the law.

What can we do if we find out we have a surprise medical bill? Nancy says the most important thing we need your help with today is joining the American Heart Association to make sure Congress and the Biden administration are ensuring patients are protected by rules. strict and strict application of the No Surprises Act.
